First-Time Feeding Instructions - Dogs and Cats

Vegan cat foods Vegan dog foods

If this is your first time switching to a plant-based brand of pet feed, we encourage you to get familiar with the guidelines below for the transition period, feeding amounts and other directions. Please remember to see your vet regularly, no matter which product you choose, to ensure your companion’s well-being. Last but not least, remember to provide clean water at all times.

Guidelines are divided by brand: for the moment, VGRRR offers Ami, Evolution, Max Life and Benevo pet feed products. Feeding amounts are calculated based on average food requirements and may change depending on age, activity level and temperament.

AmiCat and AmiDog

When switching to Ami, gradually introduce it over a 1-week period: one quarter Ami pet food on days 1-2, half on days 3-4, and three quarters on days 5-6. On day 7, you can feed your pet Ami kibble exclusively.

Feeding amounts

The daily feeding amounts for small breeds and large breeds of dogs can be found on this page.

Adding water

Ami kibble may be served either dry or lightly moistened with warm water.

Benevo

When switching to Benevo, gradually introduce it over a 1-week period, as shown below.

Adding water

Benevo Dog and Cat dry formulas may be served either dry or lightly moistened with warm water.

Benevo Duo

Adult dog: 1 can per 20 lb of dog's body weight. Serve in 2 portions.

Adult cat: 1/2 can per 10 lb of cat's body weight. Serve in 2 portions.

Puppies, kittens, pregnant and lactating cats require 2 to 3 times the adult amount. Serving can be reduced for less active and older dogs and cats.

Option 1. Start by adding Benevo Duo to your pet’s regular food: 1 part Benevo Duo, 4 parts old product. During the following two weeks, increase the proportion of Benevo until no old product is added.

Option 2. Start by mixing 1 teaspoon of flaked nutritional yeast, margarine or oil to each cup of plant-based product. During the following two week, gradually reduce the amount of yeast or margarine to zero.

Evolution Diet

Feed up to 1/3 less than prescription, premium and regular pet food.

To facilitate the transition, add 2 tbsp of tuna in oil, flaked nutritional yeast, margarine or oil (or creamed corn/broccoli cheese soup for canned product) to Evolution pet food, which you will gradually reduce to zero over one week. A non-gradual transition can cause vomiting or diarrhea. Although not necessary, you can add fresh, raw food to optimize your pet’s diet.

For cats: Kittens can be started on Gourmet Fondue as soon as they begin to nibble solid food. Until the age of 6 months, kittens should be fed moistened food at intervals throughout the day. Dry food can be kept before kittens at all times. As for adults, they can consome kibble dry or mixed with water, at normal daily amounts or slightly higher or lower depending on cat’s activity level.

Up until 6 months, puppies should be fed moistened food they will consume at intervals throughout the day. For adult dogs, Gourmet Fondue should be fed dry or with one part water, milk or broth to one part of dry food. Rations can be increased or decreased according to the dog’s daily activity.

To increase hydration, start by using the lower amount of dry feed printed on the bag. Use cool, not hot water and let stand half an hour.
