Introduction to Supplements for Pets

Whether you are preparing homemade pet food and need to ensure complete nutrition or are caring for a pet prone to deficiencies, VGRRR offers supplements that will ensure great nutritional balance.

Why prepare pet foods at home? Your pet will enjoy more varied flavours, you have full control over ingredients used (for example, you can exclude corn and wheat if your dog or cat has sensitivities), and you save on shipping, due to the small weight of supplements.

All supplements offered on vgrrr.com are exempt of animal products.

For Cats

We offer two choices: VegeCat original and VegeCat phi™ for cats with a history of urinary tract problems. Both can be added to homemade feed to ensure a nutritionally complete meal with, amongst others, rare nutrients Taurine, Vitamin D2, Vitamin A and arachidonate. Dietary taurine, an amino acid, is essential to cats. It is generally found in meats, and a deficiency causes blindness and heart disease. Vitamin A is produced by biosynthesis of vegetable matter by most mammals but cats lack this ability. As for Vitamin D, it is another essential vitamin found only in animal tissues in the form of D3; VegeCat supplements contain vegan Vitamin D2.The essential fatty acid arachidonate is rare in non-animal sources. Cats require it for numerous vital metabolic processes including reproduction.

How to use supplements for cats? Use a kibble recipe, like the ones shared on our blog, and add VegeCat or VegeCat phi as per amounts below.

Supplement amounts

10 pound (4.5 kg) cat would get 1 ¼ teaspoon (6 ml/5.3 g) per day of VegeCat phi™ supplement.

  • Supply of SMALL bag of VegeCat phi™ lasts a 10 lb. (4.5 kg) adult cat for 6 weeks.
  • Supply of MEDIUM bag of VegeCat phi™ lasts a 10 lb. (4.5 kg) adult cat for 3 months.
  • Supply of LARGE bag of VegeCat phi™ lasts a 10 lb. (4.5 kg) adult cat for 6 months.

Please note: Kittens need the Vegekit™ supplement formulated for growth. We currently do not carry it, but you can use our dry kibble formulas in the meantime.

A note on VegeCat vs. VegeCat phi™: VegeCat is the original product and is generally preferred for older cats with weaker kidneys.

All cats can use the VegeCat phi™ formula, but is is formulated for cats with urinary issues, such as urinary crystals. The active ingredient is Sodium bisulfate, a superior urine acidifier and a safe substance. If you are not sure whether your cat is prone to urinary health problem (urinary crystals), measure your cat's urine pH with pH strips or measure pH at your vet. The pH of a cat’s urine should be in the range of 6.0 to 6.5. If you find that the urine pH is too alkaline, VegeCat phi™ is a good option to increase acidity.

For Dogs

We offer the supplement VegeDog™, completely derived from non-animal sources. It offers, amongst others, Taurine, Vitamin D2, and Vitamin A., nutrients required by dogs but usually abundant in animal tissues only. VegeDog™ has been used by the compassionate caretakers of numerous dogs over many years.

Use a kibble recipe like the ones on our blog or create or your own recipe, and ensure you add enough VegeDog™ (see amounts below).
